Connewitz under assault!

The French reaction near Connewitz was short-lived. Under the combined fire of the Austrian artillery and the impassive resistance of the Austrian 'kaiserliks', the hastily built Lefol's bataillon de marche is broken and dispersed.

The Austrian columns form immediately for the assault of Connewitz after traversing the bridge defended by the Erfurt battallions, a mix of convalescent and detachments from different French units. However, the small front and the narrow approach make the fight very difficult for the Austrians, that are repulsed.

A note for Lasalle fans
Lasalle does not allow march columns to fight, so the bridge assaults requiring very reduced fronts are not well represented. There was some friendly discussions in the Lsalle Forum regarding this topics (See
Bridges again). At last I have used the Scruf proposal:
"A march column can assault a defile like a bridge. It fights at 1/2 dice and with no previous shooting, adding a -2 for "bad terrain" as they will be fighting in cramped quarters. However the small front, the enemy never halves their dice"

  1. Interesting! The French cannot fight their way out and the Austrians cannot fight there way in?

Actually the French are trying to avoid that Austrians cross the river. They don't need to go out the town

  3. Yes-I have read it all again...I thought at first that Lefol had assaulted from the town.

Still, the French do not seem to be having much luck in this encounter!

  4. Very realistic the way the narrow crossing has caused the Austrian attack to 'bottleneck'and left them exposed to French fire in those dense formations.

  5. Actually Connewitz and Dolitz were not taken by the Austrians the first day of the battle.
Maybe the Lasalle re-fight will end in a different way!

  8. So Rafa,

Would you set up the scenario in a different way if you were going to run it again to avoid the problem with the bridges or would you use different tactics the next time (ie bombardment etc).
I am generally uncomfortable changing a rule to solve a tactical problem on the fly. I am curious, did you see this as a problem before the battle started or was it only when you approached the bridge.

I did seen the bridges like a problem before the battle, but this historical scenario requires the presence of several bridgss. I also feel unconfortable by changing a rule, but the lack of a such rule, is the cause of the problem in Lasalle.
I am again hard at work so my play time is very reduced., but I will maintain everbody informed aboute the development of the paly
