The Crobern diorama book. A Christmas present

You can see above the book "Cröbern 1813 The Battle of the Nations in Miniature" by Wolfgang Meyer describing the making of his fabulous and amazing Cröbern diorama.
The book can be purchased on-line (in German and English versions) in the e-shop of his site, along with other items (DVD's, cartoons) related with the diorama.
Don't forget to visit the Geschichte in miniaturen web page with dioramas for Crobern, Mockern and Ahuenhain, as well as his old web site Croebern 1813.

The diorama of Croebern is finished

A brief message from Wolfgang Meyer has announced the completion of the Croebern diorama. According to his own words (translated from German):

"After seven years working on Cröbern diorama is now finally over. On 18.08.2013, the last figures were placed. The Cröbern diorama is finished and it turned out exactly as I had always imagined.
With the help of my wife and my friends Daniela and Patrick the Great diorama could be built over.
Currently I am working on the documentation of the project. The first exhibition will be in October at Markham (Germany). There will available a book about the project and a DVD."

You can see further details in the two websites of the project: Croebern-1813 and Geschichte in Miniaturen. I recommend to explore both websites in full, using a translating tool if you (like me) are not fluent in German.

Trafalgar and Vitoria

I am a fan of Curro, a great maker of military dioramas, author of many of Napoleonic subjects, and whose work can be seen at his 'blog of curro'.
However, this post is about his other blog: 'Diorama de Trafalgar'. A sample piece of this amazing diorama is now in the main Exposition about the Bicentennial of the Battle of Vitoria in the Sala Fundación Caja Vital Kutxa  (c/ Postas, 13 and 15 - 01005 Vitoria-Gasteiz), until October 31. Yan can see below two pictures of this singular piece

In addition to the above curro's blog, you can also read a full report (in Spanish) with many, many pictures about the diorama at the 'Todo a babor' page.

And you could say: Trafalgar and Vitoria? Well, the nexus is the figure of Miguel Ricardo de Álava y Esquivel (7 July 1770 – 14 July 1843), a.k.a. the General Alava, which holds the distinction to have been the only man who was present at both Trafalgar and Waterloo, fighting against the British on the former and with them on the latter.
He was present as a Marine at the Battle of Trafalgar on board the flagship of his uncle Admiral Ignacio Álava and served as delegate of the Spanish forces in the British units during the Peninsular War, wehere he saw action in the Siege of Ciudad Rodrigo and the storming of Badajoz as well as in the battles of Bussaco, Salamanca and Vitoria.

After the battle of Vitoria, the General Álava, in command of a British cavalry unit, took his native city, thus preventing it from being plundered by the British: 'These (the British) are worst ever than the French'. The town acknowledged his exploit by giving him a sword. The below picture (from the Vitoria comics book) depicts this incident.

He was appointed Spanish ambassador to The Hague in 1815, and he incorporated to the Wellington's staff during the Waterloo campaign. Álava stuck close to the Duke during the battle yet, despite being in the thick of the action, both Wellington and Alava survived the 10 hours' slaughter without so much as a scratch, with the Duke declaring to Alava: 'The hand of Almighty God has been upon me this day.'

The Jaca Citadel Military Miniatures Museum

The Casttle of San Pedro (Jaca, Huesca, Spain) also known as 'La Ciudadela' (The Citadel) is a pentagonal fortress, built at the end of the 16th century that still retains today all of its characteristic parts: moat, battlements, scarps, barracks, powder houses, tunnels... as well as a beautiful entrance, accessed via a bridge.

The castle lodges in one of its casemates the Museum of Military Miniatures, whose origins are rooted in the collection of lead figurines which were gathered from the sixties onwards by Carlos Royo-Villanova, a miniatures fan and history lover. The figures and their accessories, all to the same scale, 1:87 or 20 mm in height, were mostly produced by the Valencia-based company Alymer.

Afeter the cleaning and restauration by a professional team of technicians and Jaca volunteers, the over 32,000 lead miniatures are now displayed on 23 historical dioramas. The visitors of the Museum can view the recreation of armies and battles of many historical periods, from Ancient Egypt, Classical Greece and the Roman Empire through to the period of the Crusades, the Crown of Aragón, the Spanish Tercios and the Napoleonic era, without forgetting the great 20th century wars, modern mountain units and the Spanish army, now deployed on humanitarian missions.

The web site of the Museum:
The Jaca Citadel Military Miniatures Museum (in english, français and español) allows to known the Museum's history, its origins, current rooms, permanent exhibitions as well as a virtual visit of the dioramas.

The Museum is on charge of Diego García, professional military man and fan of the historical miniaturism.

A too realistic diorama?

As many of you surely know, I am a follower of the Croebern-1813 web site. That Project want to show a frozen instant of the battle of Leipzig (16th october 1813) showing the arrival of the Austrian Army Reserve, around 4.00 p.m, to the villages of Cröbern, Crostewitz and Markkleeberg villages, located in the southern zone of the battlefiled.
The diorama is composed of many different scenes and vignettes depicting different aspects od the battlefield. The members of the Project team want a diorama so realist as posible... with all consequences. Using their own words translated from german,
"the normal human needs are the most understandable thing in the world and soldiers of every nation had to perform their needs where theystood. We want also to show these aspects and here is the first experiments. Evidentely another “little thing” must be still modelled."

So real like life itself!

The amazing Croebern Diorama

Croebern 1813Croebern-1813 is an ambitious Project run by three german entusiasts: Dirk Tietten, Niels Rullkötter and Wolfgang Meyer.
They are making a very big diorama of the Cröbern area, during the first day of the battle of Leipzig (October 16, 1813) around 16.00 o'clock. Using 1/72 scale buildings, scenery and figures, the representation of the village of Cröbern will cover, when finished, approximately 14 square meters. The goal is to represent a frozen vision of the village and the surrounding area, so many individual scenes and vignettes are simultaneously shown, with an incredible realism.

Croebern 1813 The web site Croebern 1813, regularly updated, follows the progress of the diorama construction, showing the planning, the research and many useful tricks about scenary making. A web-based shop allows the purchase of several items, such as CD's with pictures of the progress of the diorama, grass mats, model trees, hedges, buildings, etc.

Croebern 1813 A must for any fan of military modelling!
